Early in the 1950s, a Veterinary Training Centre of the Northern Nigeria government to train Field Assistants in livestock management was established.
The centre was later developed to run a two-year certificate course, at which point it became part of the Veterinary Field Station which comprised of a Veterinary Public Health Unit, Trypanosomosis Unit, Poultry Production Unit, and the Veterinary Investigation Laboratory. Administered by the defunct Northern Nigeria Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, the creation of states in 1968 saw the centre transferred to the Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA) and later in the same year,
